Sewell is a mining camp with more than 100 years of history, born when the American William Braden starts the industrial exploitation of “El Teniente”, the largest underground copper mine in the world. Today super well preserved and declared a National Monument in 1998 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006.
Being built on steps and instead of streets the city has stairs, it was known as the city of stairs, that charming camp, located in the Andes mountain ranges at over 2,300 meters, has a complex network of stairs that connects the buildings, squares and other secondary stairs. Residential areas, work areas, public spaces, clubs, schools, theaters, churches and a hospital.
This complex of singular architecture that shows a functional design and ingenious construction techniques, had more than 15,000 habitants in the 60s, who later moved to other more modern cities. This same progress led the city to lose little by little its residents, but still maintains its charm, uniqueness and a lot of history to be told.
